Kinesis: Graduate Journal in Philosophy
History and Purpose
In the late 1960's,
Kinesis was founded with the goal of providing
an open-forum for graduate students of philosophy to publish their respective
works, and receive scholarly criticism. But being founded in the mid 1960's,
Kinesis didn't want to appear to bourgeois, and kept its doors open
to all papers of a "philosophical" nature.
This goal was quickly seen to be too narrow, and soon book reviews and
interviews graced the pages of Kinesis – recent interviews have
included Sir Alfred J. Ayer, and Alasdair MacIntyre. We also continue to
encourage scholarly criticism in the form of reaction-papers to manuscripts
previously published in Kinesis.
Kinesis occupies a unique position among scholarly journals in
that it is one of the few journals in the world which is run entirely by
and for graduate students. Always the highest levels of scholarship are
strived for, and we continue to hold the goal of publishing quality graduate
work as our highest aim.
Thanks to continuing support from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale
and high-quality submissions from graduate students from around the world,
Kinesis has been able to keep its "head above water" and continue
to publish two editions per year for libraries and philosophy departments
on several continents.
Kinesis, perennially under new editorship, strives for leadership
among graduate publications, and continually searches for ways in which
to improve its looks, level of scholarship, and reputation among scholarly
journals.
Kinesis believes that the philosophical work of graduate students
constitutes a substantial contribution to the debate on contemporary philosophical
and socio-political issues. Kinesis was founded to offer a forum
to graduate students in all fields to express their philosophical views
in a critical yet open-ended context. We believe that when creative thought
renders explicit the relation between philosophical concepts and contemporary
problems, basic philosophical ideas are alive and working.
Contributions in any area of investigation will be considered, provided
they establish the viability of the arguments and conclusions of the author.
Response articles concerning works previously published in Kinesis
are encouraged, and we also welcome book reviews. All submissions should
be accompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelope, three (3) copies of
the manuscript, and a compact disc which has the submission saved in either
a Microsoft Word, or ASCII format for an IBM compatible wordprocessor.
Kinesis is prepared by the graduate students in the Department
of Philosophy, Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.
